Women To Watch 2024 honoree Dr. Tonjanika Ballard

Dr. Tonjanika Ballard, DNP, PMHNP-BC, is a distinguished figure in the mental health field. Her journey as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner since 2015 is marked by a fervent dedication to advocating for marginalized populations, particularly those grappling with intricate mental health issues. This commitment led her to establish Unique Holistic Care, LLC, a practice that champions individual empowerment and destigmatizes mental well-being. Dr. Ballard's unique approach and understanding of her patients' needs set her apart in the field.

Leading an impressive outpatient multispecialty group practice with over 18 providers and contractors, Unique Holistic Care offers a wide range of services, including ADHD testing, addiction treatment, medication management, and therapy. A reflection of its community, Dr. Ballard's vision extends to expanding into community programs and continuing her advocacy for people of color in substance use treatment. Her practice serves as a mentor and role model for aspiring nurse practitioners, offering support and bridging gaps in the field.

Dr. Ballard is dedicated to her field, a commitment beyond her practice. Her voice has resonated at local, national, and international conferences, where she passionately addresses mental health disparities. She has authored publications and has upcoming works in esteemed journals, championing change and advocating for those in need.

Her most recent endeavor, Empower PMHNP, is a coaching business that empowers other PMHNPs to establish their own private practices. Dr. Ballard is uniquely qualified to assist others on this journey with a track record of successfully mentoring over seven PMHNPs in the past five years.

Dr. Ballard is an enthusiastic traveler who prioritizes self-care. She views traveling as a means of rejuvenation from the demanding work of mental healthcare. Family plays a significant role in Dr. Ballard's life. Having navigated the challenges of divorce and single motherhood, she now thrives in a supportive and loving marriage. Her experiences, combined with her background as a high school teacher, have given her a deep understanding of the obstacles others may encounter.

In the future, Dr. Ballard aims to focus on clinical research, particularly addressing the underrepresentation of Black individuals in clinical trials. Recognizing that Black Americans makeup 13% of the US population yet only account for approximately 9% of clinical trial participants, Dr. Ballard is committed to increasing diversity in research. She hopes to leverage the diverse patient population at Unique Holistic Care to lead and participate in

research initiatives that aim to develop medications and treatments tailored to Black individuals' specific needs and genetic makeup. By doing so, she strives to reduce healthcare disparities and ensure that all treatments are effective and accessible to everyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.
